In 1861 Lincoln expressed the fear that premature attempts at emancipation would mean the loss of the border states, and that "to lose Kentucky is nearly the same as to lose the whole game." [34] At first Lincoln reversed attempts at emancipation by Secretary of War Simon Cameron and Generals John C. P.s sent into the provinces to raise troops 'for the defence of the realm'. Most unsatisfactory of all in the long run would be the principle of popular sovereignty, which was bound to make of each territory a battleground where the supporters of the South would contend with the defenders of the North and West.

Overall, the freed slaves did face a difficult life from our standpoint today, but this life was clearly not riddled with incomparable hardships. The slow moving Confederates finally collided with General Blunt's Kansas militiamen at Lexington on October 19, but Shelby's Iron Brigade, of Price's army, forced General Blunt to retreat.
