Speech, 1937, titled �The Contribution of Buckingham [County] to the Confederacy� delivered before the United Daughters of the Confederacy and attributed to William Shepard. In fact, it was considered so outside the way of thinking that many people argued in Congress that even considering adopting the 13th Amendment was itself unconstitutional. (The theory behind this was that Congress could not increase the powers of the Federal government and also that slavery was an inherent human right that could not be abridged.) Later arguments against the amendment would be highly racist in nature.

In the war's waning months the Confederate Congress voted to accept black soldiers, but this legislation was passed too late to be tested in practice. It was argued by opponents of capital punishment, that hanging, when carried out at the rate of 11 or so a year on average, over the first 65 years of the 20th century, served no useful purpose as a deterrent to the most serious crimes, but was rather simply an act of cruelty inflicted on a few people, often for no particularly obvious reason in the minds of the general public. to the throne in 1837, only the monarch had the power to decide whether a death sentence passed by their judges should be carried out, as all the people were, of course the subjects of the Monarch.

Like Brutus in Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar (which was very popular among ordinary Americans of that distant era), they were "the noblest Romans of them all". The advice of an amicable separation presupposes that the Southern Confederacy, although it assumed the offensive in the Civil War, at least wages it for defensive purposes. Yet this horrible Civil War period has been consistently glorified as a time when the nation managed to abolish the curse of slavery and preserve a Union that had been fragmenting.
